“Things Could Get Tough”: Expert Explains Where Russia Is Already Building Military Bases Near NATO Borders

Europe

Geostrategy researcher Oleg Mahaletskyi said that Russia attacks where it sees weakness, and that it could test NATO, for example, in the Baltic Sea, starting with the islands, reports Politeka.

He spoke about this on the “7 Steps” channel.

“These are not even gangsters, because gangsters still have certain rules and codes. This is more like street thugs who have gained power, and they think in terms of attacking whenever they see someone’s weakness. The only thing that stops them is knowing they will get a response,” Oleg Mahaletskyi argues.

According to the program’s guest, Finland is unlikely to become the next victim of Russian aggression because it has a strong military, can mobilize people quickly, and, due to its long experience of living alongside Russia, maintained compulsory military service even before joining NATO. Therefore, he notes, Finland’s long-term strategy is fortunately paying off.

“However, other countries in this region may face difficult times. Moscow has not only started preparing this base (editor’s note: near the Finnish border). There is already confirmed information from open sources that in the Pskov and Smolensk regions, the Russians are building bridges, interchanges, and various logistics facilities—something that had been virtually absent in these depressed and neglected regions for almost the past 30 years. And we understand that this is hardly a sign of an effort to improve living standards,” Oleg Mahaletskyi says.

The expert adds that the geostrategy of the Baltic Sea region is well understood, and that the islands there could become targets for testing NATO’s response. In other words, he explains, Russia would not necessarily launch a full-scale invasion. Instead, it could resemble the events of 2014, involving a false-flag operation, paramilitary groups, the participation of Belarus, and similar tactics.
