"Trump Will Be Under Heavy Pressure": Expert Explains the Goal of the G7 Summit

Political analyst Ruslan Bortnik explained that at the G7 summit, participants will be trying to gently persuade Trump to continue supporting Ukraine in its war against Russia, especially now that tensions in the Middle East appear to be easing, Politeka reports.
He discussed this in his blog.
According to the expert, even if there is no meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy at the G7 summit, Trump will still meet with Macron. Moreover, virtually all participants in the summit are direct and close allies of Ukraine. Therefore, Bortnik argues, they will collectively attempt to convince Trump, presenting him with data from the front lines, information about Russian strikes, and public opinion research regarding Putin in an effort to bring him back to supporting Ukraine.
"Especially since the crisis in the Middle East appears to be approaching its conclusion, which would free up certain resources for the United States. Therefore, the G7 summit will be a battle for Trump—a battle to reshape Trump's thinking and alter his strategy. All G7 participants will, to one degree or another, try to persuade Trump to change his approach toward Ukraine. Even if there is no meeting with Zelenskyy, Trump will be under considerable pressure," Ruslan Bortnik explains.
At the same time, he notes that Western media outlets report that G7 participants are wary of pushing too hard. Instead, they will seek to influence Trump more subtly, knowing that he is known for abruptly leaving events if he is dissatisfied and for ending discussions and walking away. Nevertheless, the expert maintains that summit participants will try to bring the United States into alignment with the five-point position that Europe has presented to Russia.
"On the other hand, the political situation is not particularly favorable. Trump and his administration increasingly associate Ukraine with Israel. And Israel has repeatedly experienced crises during which Trump clashed with Netanyahu. Trump believes that Ukraine and its allies may stand in the way of his desire to reach a peace deal. Therefore, persuading Trump will not be easy," Ruslan Bortnik concludes.
