“Trump has given up on negotiating with Putin”: expert assesses whether the U.S. will transfer Patriot licenses to Ukraine

Trump-Putin Meeting in Alaska

Political strategist Mikhail Sheitelman stated that Europeans at the G7 summit gave Trump a good idea — to sell Ukraine licenses for Patriot systems — and he is inclined to agree, with the answer expected at the NATO summit, according to Politeka.

He spoke about this on his blog.

According to the expert, one of the intrigues of the G7 summit is a proposal from European countries for the U.S. to grant Ukraine a license to produce interceptor missiles for Patriot air defense systems. He explains that the idea is that the United States itself cannot keep up with producing these missiles, while Ukraine is ready to buy more, so it could be given a license to produce them domestically.

“I think that today’s Trump, in today’s situation, when in general Trump has probably given up on negotiating with Putin — meaning he has given up on turning Putin to his side — may sell the license. Yes, he may sell the license,” Mikhail Sheitelman claims.

According to the expert, it does not necessarily have to be presented as the U.S. selling Ukraine a license, especially since licenses are sold to companies, not states. In other words, he explains, one can imagine Germany’s Rheinmetall, Sweden’s Saab, and the Ukrainian Fire Point forming a joint venture, and the license being granted there — meaning everything is under the control of both the Germans and the Swedes, while in practice the missiles are produced by Ukrainians somewhere in Sweden. The expert emphasizes that this scenario is plausible and could happen in the very near future.

“I am willing to believe in this structure. Especially since at an exhibition in France they showed some manufacturing equipment. I think those were exactly the people — defense ministers, Ukrainians, and NATO Europeans — who could have been discussing all of this. And this is precisely where progress may be made at the NATO summit on July 7,” Mikhail Sheitelman concludes.
