Domino Effect: Expert Explains How Far Russia's Fuel Crisis Has Spread

Fuel

Political strategist Mykhailo Sheitelman says fuel purchase limits are now being imposed even in Russia's Far East, while Russian crude oil is losing its place on the global market due to competition from Iranian supplies, Politeka reports.

He shared these remarks on his blog.

"Just imagine where Sakhalin is—an island in the Pacific Ocean. And they're running out of gasoline there. It's the domino effect. One domino falls after another. First came reports from Irkutsk, and now Sakhalin. And if you think it's only Sakhalin, you're mistaken. In Severo-Kurilsk, authorities have introduced preventive restrictions on fuel sales. That's practically next to Japan. I warned that this would spread as far as Mongolia and Japan," Sheitelman said.

According to him, gas stations in Severo-Kurilsk have seen what authorities describe as an unjustified surge in fuel purchases, with residents buying unusually large quantities. Officials insist there is no fuel shortage and that everything is proceeding according to plan. Nevertheless, they have introduced a limit of 20 liters per person per day.

"So, according to them, everything is fine—which is why each person can buy only 20 liters a day," the expert noted.

He also pointed out that Russia is now considering importing gasoline from India, while officials continue to claim that everything is unfolding according to plan.

Adding further pressure to Russia's fuel problems, Sheitelman said, is U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio's announcement that the United States will no longer issue licenses for Russian oil supplies. In his view, this is a logical step, as the Strait of Hormuz has reopened and global oil prices have fallen back to levels seen before the U.S.–Iran conflict.

"That means Russian oil is no longer needed because there's an abundance of Iranian oil on the market. In fact, Russian oil will increasingly be replaced by Iranian supplies. All of this has accelerated—the whole process is now moving much faster," Sheitelman concluded.
