Xenophobia Contradicts EU Rules, Standards, and Principles: Expert Explains How to Address Attacks on Ukrainians in Poland

Political analyst and serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Musiienko, has stated that all available mechanisms—legal, media, and civic—should be used to combat xenophobia and attacks on Ukrainians in Poland, Politeka reports.

He shared his views on the matter in his blog.

"Ukrainians come here, work, pay taxes to the Polish budget, and try to integrate into society. This is unlike many people (I don't want to offend anyone, but let's be honest) who arrive from Asia, the Middle East, or Africa and are not always quick to find work, instead relying on social benefits. At the same time, they unite into communities, and people begin not only to fear them but also to respect them. They make others respect them. Ukrainians also need to ensure they are respected in other countries," Oleksandr Musiienko explained.

According to him, it is necessary to work closely with the Ukrainian diaspora. First, the priority should remain encouraging Ukrainians to return home. Second, Ukrainians abroad must protect themselves through lawful means. As the expert stressed, this does not mean taking illegal actions. On the contrary, Ukrainians should comply with the laws of Poland and other countries while at the same time making their presence and concerns visible to help prevent attacks against them.

He also added that the strongest possible response from the Polish authorities is needed. Prime Minister Donald Tusk has already commented on the issue, but the President should also speak out. Law enforcement agencies should publicly clarify that such acts carry criminal liability, ensure that those responsible are prosecuted, and take action to restrain radical groups.

"Xenophobia is contrary to the rules, standards, and principles of the European Union, and Poland is, after all, an EU member state. Moreover, I would recommend raising this issue in the European Parliament, the Council of Europe, the OSCE, and all European institutions in order to draw attention to it. We need to collect all documented cases of violations and violence against Ukrainians in Poland and other countries and bring this issue to the forefront. It is important that this is heard in Brussels, Strasbourg, and other decision-making centers. We must also unite to defend ourselves," Oleksandr Musiienko asserted.
