USA President Donald Trump's special representative Steve Witkoff and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will hold talks with their European counterparts in Paris today, April 17, to discuss ending the war in Ukraine.

It is also noted that these talks represent the highest level of interaction on the issue of the Russian Federation's war against Ukraine since February.

Journalists recall that in recent months the US has not shown interest in consulting with its European partners. The talks in Paris are significant simply because they are taking place, the BBC notes. Witkoff and Rubio will also meet with French President Emmanuel Macron and his team.

Marco Rubio will then hold talks with Lemmy, along with his French and German counterparts. European national security advisers will also be present.

The US State Department said the main topic of the talks would be a cessation of hostilities in Ukraine. Steve Witkoff will also report on his meeting with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin on April 11.

European diplomats said they would urge the US to increase pressure on Moscow to secure an unconditional ceasefire. One European official said they wanted the US to apply “a little more of a stick” to Russia.
