The Process Is Very Complex: Expert Explains What’s Happening with Peace Negotiations on Ukraine

Political expert and military serviceman Oleksandr Musiyenko explained that despite the apparent dynamics in the negotiation process, nothing has really changed, and it is not worth expecting quick progress towards peace, Politeka reports.

He shared this in his blog.

According to the expert, the negotiation process seems to have become more active: Vitkoff traveled to Moscow, spoke with Putin for three hours, followed by statements from Peskov and Ushakov, Rubio gave an interview, Trump made a speech — all the media are reporting that he is ready to meet with Putin and then with Zelensky, and a meeting is already being prepared, etc.

"This is what we have. Has anything changed on a global scale? Did you see or feel that something fundamental has shifted, that there is significant, substantial movement in the process? Personally, I haven’t seen it. Statements, meetings, trips, phone calls, changes, various stages of the negotiation process… I fully understand that this process is very complex, it’s not simple, and it has its nuances. And as much as we’d like to speed it up, there are major obstacles on this path," Musiyenko commented.

According to the expert, when Trump came to power, he essentially launched the negotiation process, but from that point until now, the dynamics have remained the same. Of course, he states, it couldn’t be otherwise, because this war is existential and genocidal — Russia wants to erase Ukraine from the face of the earth, and we harbor no illusions about that. Therefore, he emphasizes, we shouldn’t expect that one to three meetings or five to seven phone calls would lead to any real progress in a war of this scale.

"But essentially, let’s compare the interview that the U.S. President’s special representative Steve Vitkoff gave in March-April with the current interview by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Back then the issue was territories, and now again the issue is territories. How much real progress has been made in that case? That’s the question that arises. How far have we actually moved?" Musiyenko concludes.
