“In any other situation, their meeting is impossible”: Expert explains where a meeting between the Presidents of Ukraine and Russia is possible

Political strategist Mikhail Sheitelman explained that despite Trump's statements, Putin may never meet with Zelensky because he is afraid of the Ukrainian president and wants to continue the war, according to Politeka.

As the expert notes, Trump has started preparing a meeting between Putin and Zelensky — but it seems Putin himself has not. In his post, Sheitelman says, Trump wrote that he had called Putin and begun preparations for his meeting with Zelensky, with the location to be determined later. After that, there would be a trilateral summit with Trump himself. According to the expert, this is all just smoke and mirrors, because Yury Ushakov (Putin’s foreign policy aide) stated that Trump and Putin merely discussed the idea of exploring the possibility of raising the level of representatives from the Ukrainian and Russian sides — and that’s all they agreed on. So, this isn’t about a meeting of presidents.

“And Trump says that they’ve opened the way for Putin and Zelensky to presumably call each other and agree on a meeting location. That’s a lie. Trump is lying. Trump is openly lying. Putin is simply stalling for time to continue the war, and Trump is falling for it,” Sheitelman emphasizes.

According to the expert, the lowest point of this situation will arrive very soon. Putin keeps trying to prove he’s still part of a peace process, though Russia was never really part of it. Moreover, Sheitelman states that Putin has already achieved everything he wanted — he finally got a meeting with Trump, the peak of his political career; there’s nowhere higher to go.

“Trump believes Putin and respects him. And indeed, he doesn’t realize that Putin is afraid of Zelensky — but in this context, that doesn’t really matter to him. We, of course, understand that Putin refuses to meet with Zelensky because he’s afraid of him. Naturally. I stand by my prediction: Putin will never meet with Zelensky, except for the moment when he’s sitting in a death row cell in The Hague and Zelensky comes to visit him. In any other situation, their meeting is impossible. But for Trump, these motivations are completely irrelevant. Why would he care why exactly Putin refuses to meet with Zelensky?” concludes Mikhail Sheitelman.
