Article 4 Is Just About Consultations on What to Do Next – Political Strategist on NATO's Response to the Shahed Attack on Poland

Political strategist Mikhail Sheitelman stated that international practice allows for a limited retaliatory strike in response to aggression, but as usual, NATO is backing down, reports Politeka.
He shared this in his blog.

"Donald Tusk convened a meeting under Article 4 of NATO. Some are smirking at this. Well, they're wrong to smirk, you see? Obviously, no one would have agreed to invoke Article 5 right away. If Tusk had come out and said he was invoking Article 5 of NATO – meaning, let's launch a joint retaliatory aggression, defend our Poland – everyone would have stalled. But everyone is fine with Article 4. Article 4 is just consultations on what to do next," said Mikhail Sheitelman.

The North Atlantic Alliance, the expert says, held the meeting, discussed everything, allies expressed solidarity with Poland, condemned Russia's reckless behavior – and that’s basically it. So, he concludes, we still haven’t seen any retaliatory strikes, as is usually expected in such situations.

As the expert explains, no one is talking about total war, but international practice in such situations calls for a limited retaliatory strike in response to a limited act of aggression. He reminds us that when Israel bombed Iran, Iran responded not with a diplomatic note but with rockets – and vice versa. And on September 11, he adds, when Al-Qaeda attacked the United States, bombs fell on Afghanistan and Iraq in response.

"Trump, I remind you, called the Emir of Qatar and said: 'Israel hit you. It was a one-off strike. There won't be more.' And if Poland now launched a limited strike on the Kaliningrad region, on the city of Baltiysk, one of the two Baltic Fleet bases, then Trump would call Putin and say: 'That was the retaliatory strike. You got 19 missiles. There won’t be more for now – unless you keep firing.' That would be a response. That would be called NATO. That would be called war – not cowardice. That’s what it would be called," concludes Mikhail Sheitelman.
