Tariff Wars: Expert Explains Why Trump Is Stalling on Russia and What He Wants from Europe

Political strategist Mikhail Sheitelman spoke about the situation regarding new sanctions and explained that Trump would invest more in the economic war against Russia if Europe helps him with China, according to Politeka.
He shared his views in his blog.
As the expert notes, Ursula von der Leyen had a conversation with Trump, and it seems that the 19th package of EU sanctions against Russia will be announced on September 19, which would be symbolically fitting due to the number. In this sanctions package, he adds, there will be new restrictions targeting the Russian banking system, the shadow fleet, and cryptocurrencies.
“Cryptocurrencies — because when Russian companies make payments, they also use crypto, particularly to purchase drone parts and aircraft components. They pay China in cryptocurrencies because it’s harder to control that. And there haven’t been any sanctions against this yet. So the EU is introducing certain sanctions on the use of cryptocurrencies within Russia. It’s interesting. We’ll see how this will actually work, how feasible it is, and what kind of restrictions these will be — but in any case, it’s a useful step,” explains Mikhail Sheitelman.
As he reminds us, Trump has been demanding that Europe impose tariffs on China, and the whole situation is reminiscent of World War II, when Stalin urged the U.S. to take Nazi Germany seriously, while Roosevelt wanted the Soviet Union to start fighting Japan — they reached an agreement, and together they won.
“And now Trump is essentially behaving the same way with the Europeans. He’s saying: ‘You want me to join you in the fight against Russia — financially, with weapons deliveries and intelligence sharing. Meanwhile, I, Trump, am waging a cold, economic war with the Chinese. So how about you join me in an economic war against China?’ Trump already tried — on April 2 he imposed tariffs, but Europe didn’t follow; instead, they started taking in the goods themselves. As a result, Trump lost the battle with China, they humiliated him, and he had to withdraw those tariffs. So now he’s saying — let’s do it together. Europe supports Trump in the war with China, and Trump supports Europe in the war with Russia,” concludes Mikhail Sheitelman.
