A Besieged Fortress or a Bridge for Trade: Expert Explains Where the War Is Leading Us

Ukraine

Political analyst Ruslan Bortnik stated that the government's decisions and the outcome of the war depend on the mood of Ukrainian society — and that society has not yet decided what it wants or what it is willing to do to achieve it, Politeka reports.

He discussed this in his blog.

According to the expert, the future of war and peace depends on Ukrainian society and public sentiment. If, he explains, the dominant mood in Ukraine were to sign a peace agreement, the president would not be able to go against that. And if Ukrainians wanted to fight until the very end and liberate the occupied territories, the president would not agree to any negotiations. However, the expert emphasizes, there is neither one mood nor the other.

“Ukrainian society is not ready for either peace or war. 73% say, ‘We need to stop the war.’ But are there lines outside military enlistment offices? Are there lines to donate for the wounded, for the front, for everything else? Around 30% of Ukrainian society supports compromises with Moscow, while 70% want the war to end. But there are no lines at the draft offices. So society is not ready for war either,” Ruslan Bortnik stresses.

He explains that most Ukrainians want to look good and patriotic, but they don’t want to fight. They want others to fight and die in the war — not their relatives and loved ones, and certainly not themselves.

“The key truly lies within us. A rethinking of ourselves as a nation, a rethinking of our place on the geopolitical map. Who are we? What are we building in our country? Are we building a besieged fortress? Are we building a bridge for international trade and cooperation? What exactly are we building? If Ukrainians can answer this question for themselves and a solid majority forms — 70%, not 51%, that won’t be enough — then we will immediately see a shift in the government's position, in its policies, and in the strategy of the Ukrainian state and its elites regarding the war,” Ruslan Bortnik concludes.
