No talk of capitulation: Expert explains how Ukraine can secure the best peace terms

Political analyst Ruslan Bortnik explained that the current discussion is not about Ukraine’s capitulation, but about demands and concessions — and in this process, Ukraine needs to negotiate with Russia and secure Western support, Politeka reports.
He discussed this in his blog.

As the expert emphasizes, no one is demanding Ukraine’s surrender right now, not even Russia — because Russia has not actually won the war, only many small tactical battles. Therefore, he notes, the issue is not capitulation but certain demands and concessions, within which Ukraine can balance and put forward its own conditions.

“Ukraine has won the war for independence, sovereignty, and separation from Russia, even though it has lost many tactical battles and significant territories. But at most, what now threatens Ukraine is the fate of Finland. The ‘Finlandization’ of Ukraine is the most likely scenario if we do not negotiate at all and sign an agreement directly with Moscow. But if we bargain, including through intermediaries, the outcome could be even better,”
– says Ruslan Bortnik.

The main thing in this situation, the expert stresses, is not to miss the right moment to negotiate, so that Moscow does not put forward additional demands. On the other hand, he notes, Russia also faces many risks along this path: it could overextend itself, a new Prigozhin could emerge, or something could happen to Putin physically, and so on.

“In other words, this road is already covered in political fog. But right now, there is no talk of capitulation. Even Moscow is not demanding surrender. And our moderate allies, such as the U.S., are not even close to suggesting it. The Americans are saying that Ukraine will remain with the West forever — that’s why we signed agreements with them and the British. But how will it be in practice? In what form — de jure or de facto? What will be the rules of this coexistence? Let’s discuss that. There is absolutely no talk of capitulation,”
– concludes Ruslan Bortnik.
