Europe Against Trump: Expert Assesses Whether Partners Will Save Ukraine From Concessions to Russia

Trump

Political analyst and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko explained that two approaches are currently competing in the West: the United States is demanding concessions from Ukraine, while the European Commission is calling for more active support, Politeka reports.

He discussed this in his blog.

According to the expert, two approaches among Ukraine’s partners are now clashing in the West regarding how to end the war. In particular, the United States is pushing Ukraine toward a peace plan and territorial concessions instead of pressuring Russia to stop its terror. Trump, he notes, has said that he wants to stop the loss of life for humanitarian reasons — but for the same humanitarian reasons, Ukraine must be given the ability to defend itself.

“Moreover, we now see that there is another camp, other approaches, which are essentially represented by the European Commission. The European Commission is actively saying that Europe needs to consolidate, that it must support Ukraine more actively, and that Russia’s frozen assets must be redirected to Ukraine,” Oleksandr Musiienko emphasizes.

Ukraine, the expert states, is facing an acute issue of funding: the president and the minister of defense have already said that next year — which is fast approaching — the country will need another €60 billion. In addition, he says, the unresolved situation with financing affects Ukraine’s position at the negotiating table, and Putin sees this and understands he can continue to exert pressure in order to secure better terms for himself.

“By the way, as it turns out, there are different examples in Europe as well. For instance, the Dutch government, which is on its way out after the elections and the upcoming change of its Cabinet of Ministers, may allocate €700 million to support Ukraine, while other countries — Italy, for example, and not only — are hesitating and wondering whether to finance the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine’s needs. These are the examples. Europe today is not homogeneous. It is diverse; there are different approaches,” Oleksandr Musiienko explains.
