Former representative of Donetsk Oblast in the Trilateral Contact Group, Serhiy Harmash, compared the negotiating positions of Ukraine and Russia and assessed who benefits from time, Politeka reports.

“How do you know that it (ed. – Ukraine’s negotiating position) will be worse? I don’t understand. Where do these narratives come from? We lost villages and farmland that are impossible to defend, but how many cities has Russia taken in almost four years? Since 2022 — very few. I say once again: let it take villages, farmland, steppes, but I will see how it takes the agglomeration of Kostiantynivka, Druzhkivka, Kramatorsk, and Sloviansk. They still haven’t taken Pokrovsk,” Serhiy Harmash claims.

In the negotiation process, the program’s guest notes, as Zelensky stated, no mutual understanding has been found on the issue of territories, and this is the main issue both for Ukraine and for Putin. Further development of the negotiations, he argues, will depend on the situation, starting with the health of Trump, who today is the Kremlin’s main weapon, because the Russians did not take Donbas by military means and are trying to push this through the United States.

“They will be taking Donbas for another two years. And in two years we will see a deterioration of the Russian economy. In terms of manpower, we cannot afford heavy losses, because we are the defending side, and defense always suffers fewer losses than offense. And the West helps us. Who helps Russia? No one helps Russia; it is only being robbed, with its position being exploited. In 2022 they captured a lot, and then they were thrown out,” Serhiy Harmash emphasizes.

And there is no need to think, he notes, that Ukraine’s negotiating position will worsen because Trump is threatening to cut off aid. As the guest of the program reminds, Trump has already stopped free assistance to Ukraine and started making money from it through NATO, so there will be weapons — especially since, before the congressional elections, he needs to show a positive result.
