EU Accession Is About Economic and Political Cooperation: Expert on the West’s Fear of Providing Security Guarantees to Ukraine

Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko stated that it is impossible to conduct negotiations when Russia is not making concessions and the West is afraid to support Ukraine and put pressure on Putin, Politeka reports.

He said this in his blog.

At present, the expert notes, there are no signs that Russia has moved away from its initial positions, which makes it unclear how negotiations can be conducted. In addition, he adds, the issue of security guarantees remains unresolved, because one can meet endlessly in Paris and discuss this, but there are no Western troops in Ukraine. This creates the impression, Musiienko emphasizes, that the West may be playing along with Russia and trying to reach an agreement at the expense of the weaker party.

“Not all EU countries support providing security guarantees to Ukraine and sending their troops. And EU accession primarily means economic and political cooperation rather than security. In security terms, the EU currently relies on NATO or on local alliances, such as those in Northern Europe. Security guarantees after peace is established? But Russia does not want to agree to conditions that would involve the presence of troops. So how can one reach an agreement with the Russians? I’ll tell you how: change the situation, send contingents now,” Oleksandr Musiienko stresses.

Thus, he notes, Lavrov continues to claim that Western troops in Ukraine would be a legitimate target for Russia, but this has already been heard before—about NATO convoys transporting weapons to Ukraine when the “Ramstein” format began to operate. Moreover, the expert adds, after almost every strike on Ukraine, the Kremlin claims that the targets were some secret NATO facilities, instructors, mercenaries, and so on; all of this has already happened before.

“What is the difference now? What are the doubts? What is holding back the decision to send troops so that they are deployed, so that society can see them, so that trust increases, so that it becomes clear to everyone: here we are, we are with Ukraine, we are already present on the ground. I think that would be the right thing to do. And what pressure is being put on Putin? Does anyone see it? Other than what Ukraine itself is doing—striking enemy military facilities, destroying them, weakening their potential. This is where work is needed, if we truly say that the West is not forcing Ukraine into peace,” Oleksandr Musiienko concluded.
