“This Is Further Delegitimization of Putin”: Expert Assesses Whether British Intelligence Services Are Really Planning to Kidnap Putin

Putin

Political analyst Ruslan Bortnik explained why the UK defense minister made a statement about abducting Putin and assessed whether, against the backdrop of Venezuela, this signals the formation of a trend toward kidnapping world leaders, Politeka reports.

He discussed this on his blog.

“We are witnessing a public acknowledgment of the abandonment of one of the key rules of interaction among global elites—personal security, personal inviolability, immunity from such actions,” Ruslan Bortnik asserts.

Yes, he notes, this could be done to Maduro, to Gaddafi, to Hussein, because they were not part of the global elite club, they did not represent nuclear states, and they did not have a political history of relations with others. But when it comes to Putin, the expert states, this is an expansion of the Overton window: if Western intelligence services had the opportunity, they would try to take advantage of it.

“Moreover, this kind of rhetoric is further delegitimization of Putin—comparing him to terrorists, to weak leaders, to illegitimate leaders. And it is an attempt to limit Moscow’s foreign-policy mobility. That is, don’t go anywhere in particular; for example, you have a planned trip to Hungary in February of this year—don’t go, because if we have a real opportunity to reach you, we might not miss our chance. This is a pressure technology against Moscow and against Putin,” Ruslan Bortnik explains.

He also notes that the UK defense minister’s statement about wanting to kidnap Putin is not negotiating rhetoric; it maximally escalates relations and is a signal that there will be no agreements with Moscow. As an example, the expert cites Trump’s rhetoric toward Putin—saying that he kills many people, that he is weak—but even under Biden, no one in the White House threatened Putin’s personal security.
