Finns Question Article 5: Expert Explains How a NATO Member Fears Security Guarantees

NATO

Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko commented on a Politico report stating that Finland has asked the United States not to speak about security guarantees for Ukraine modeled on Article 5, Politeka reports.

He shared this in his blog.

According to the expert, there is not very good news regarding the strengthening of allies, because Finland is asking the U.S. to refrain from using the wording “an Article 5 analogue” with regard to Ukraine. Finland’s foreign minister, he says, told American senators that such wording could undermine the authority of Article 5 itself.

“They explain that if Russia tests such guarantees in practice and the West does not respond harshly, this would call into question the strength of NATO as a whole. Helsinki supports Ukraine and wants NATO membership, but believes that guarantees must be realistic and not create the illusion of full protection. Well, the Finns have cast doubt on Article 5 and NATO’s readiness to fight Russia. Bravo, nothing more to say. I think Putin is rejoicing over this in the Kremlin together with his team. That is why he will continue the war, that is why he will continue trying to split NATO together with China and demonstrate the non-viability of this project, if such statements keep being made,” Oleksandr Musiienko explains.

At the same time, the expert reminds that information recently emerged that Russia has resumed the development of military infrastructure and its military presence near the borders with Finland, which may indicate that Putin is considering various scenarios, including certain hybrid actions in the North.

“So it is strange why there is such fear of Russia. Why? Just look — Ukraine has long destroyed the myths about this supposed invincibility. If the Finns, precisely from the North, were to strike now jointly with their allies… And through the North is the fastest route to St. Petersburg, to Moscow — historically, that is the best way to advance. Everything would already be resolved, this irritant would not exist. Very simple. But instead, we hear such statements,” Oleksandr Musiienko concludes.
