“By European standards, it’s outer space, but…”: Expert assesses the real capabilities of the Coalition of the Willing for Ukraine

Political analyst and serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Ruslan Bizyaev explained that Europe is not ready for modern warfare or for making rapid decisions in general, which is why the troops of the Coalition of the Willing will not help Ukraine, Politeka reports.

He said this on the program “Dialogues” with Ruslan Bortnik.

According to the guest of the program, from a political point of view, the countries of the Coalition of the Willing want to send troops to Ukraine, but if we talk about the military-technical component, Europe’s armed forces essentially come down to the United Kingdom, France, and Romania. Yes, he notes, Finland has learned the lessons of war and currently has one of the most combat-ready armies on the European continent, but this is an army for itself, not for peacekeeping missions. That is why, he says, Finland asked not to describe security guarantees for Ukraine as an analogue of Article 5.

“The United Kingdom is ready to immediately deploy a ground contingent of 7,500 troops. By British standards, this is a lot. By European standards, it’s outer space, but by the standards of the modern Russian-Ukrainian war, it’s approximately one and a half fully manned brigades. That is, the British army is designed not for peacekeeping, but rather for police-type operations,” Ruslan Bizyaev explains.

And it must be understood, he emphasizes, that Europe is accustomed to solving problems not quickly but later. On top of that, they still need to conduct tenders, hold parliamentary hearings, assess hydrocarbon emissions, and in general they imagined war somewhat differently. The bureaucratic machine is very slow to adapt.

“As command-and-staff exercises have shown, they are capable at best of a police operation to maintain peace. That’s all. Meaning they are not ready strategically, not at the operational-tactical level, and not at the psychological level either. You’ve seen the latest studies — Europe is not ready yet. If out of 100 Germans only 23 are willing to sign a contract with the army, then it’s lights out,” Ruslan Bizyaev concluded.
