“Long live the new format of NATO”: an expert explained Ukraine’s place in the new security system

NATO

The leader of the public movement “Ridna Kraina,” Mykola Tomenko, stated that NATO in its current form is not what Ukraine needs, as it fails to fulfill its functions. Instead, a new institution that includes Ukraine is required, Politeka reports. He shared this on his channel.

“The discussion about a new version of NATO, or the so-called ‘European NATO,’ is absolutely realistic. A few years ago, we said that NATO without the United States was impossible — that it shouldn’t even be discussed, that the traditional framework shouldn’t be undermined. But now we must look at things realistically. In this system of coordinates, Ukraine’s wartime experience, its Armed Forces, and its defense developments are the key to Europe’s shield and, more broadly, to the global security system,” Mykola Tomenko asserts.

He also notes that sharing Ukraine’s experience and developments with European and Arab countries is the right approach, since Ukraine needs funding and international support to defend itself. Overall, the politician emphasizes that Ukraine is transforming from a beggar and petitioner into a country that offers a real recipe for protection.

“Already, two countries have joined NATO during the Russian-Ukrainian war, which also points to the need to reset and strengthen this structure. Therefore, Ukraine must demonstrate clear and understandable steps to integrate its proposals, recommendations, and revisions of all NATO programs into the new security system. Recent exercises have shown that the old NATO format has exhausted itself. And not only because Trump criticizes NATO, but because NATO in its current form has failed to fulfill its key function and is incapable of doing so. NATO is dead. The current format of NATO is dead — long live the new format of NATO,” Mykola Tomenko explains.

This new NATO format, he emphasizes, must function with Ukraine as a key element shaping the system. It may have a different name, the politician concludes, but the result should be the security of Europe, Ukraine, and the world as a whole.
