Vance’s mission in Budapest: an expert explained what happened to Orbán’s ratings

Orban

Political strategist Mikhail Sheitelman said that after Vance’s visit, Orbán’s chances of victory have not increased, while the Western press is generally very optimistic about the opposition’s prospects, Politeka reports. He shared this in his blog.

“How did Vance’s historic mission to Budapest end? Was he able to ‘capture’ Budapest? You know, it seems things didn’t go very well for him there. According to local Budapest activists, as a new poll showed immediately after Vance’s visit, Orbán’s party lost 3% of voter support. So he tried to support his friend Orbán’s party, but in the end — not so successful,” Mikhail Sheitelman says.

As he recalls, when Vance arrived in India, there was a fire; when he went somewhere in the mountains, there were landslides and an earthquake… When Witkoff fails negotiations, the expert emphasizes, it is the result of his actions, whereas Vance simply seems to bring bad luck with him — and now Orbán’s ratings have dropped. Although, he reflects, this may not be directly related to Vance’s visit, since the poll was conducted on the same day; nevertheless, local political analysts are already joking that perhaps the vice president should have stayed a few more days, right up until the elections.

Meanwhile, Reuters reports, the expert notes, that Magyar’s Tisza party could win two-thirds of the seats in parliament, which would mean Orbán not only loses the election but ends up with less than one-third of the seats.

“If that happens, the new government will not just come to power — they will introduce constitutional changes, which require a two-thirds majority, and will thus fully restore Hungary’s relations with the EU and resume receiving subsidies. That is, Hungary will be fully reintegrated into the EU. And, of course, one of the conditions of this reintegration would be providing us with a €90 billion loan and full support for Ukraine. If only Reuters’ words would come true. I’m not that optimistic myself — it’s hard for me to believe,” Mikhail Sheitelman concludes.
