Modus Vivendi and Modus Operandi: Expert Explains How the War Could Be Stopped Through Trade and China

Financial expert Oleksii Kush explained that China is currently significantly strengthening its position, and Ukraine could become part of a supply corridor for Chinese goods to Europe, which would enhance Ukraine’s security, according to Politeka.

He spoke about this on the program “Dialogues” with Ruslan Bortnik.

“We have found ourselves in a configuration from 800 years ago — essentially the creation of the Mongol Empire, only now it is Mongol Empire 2.0 with its center in China. The events taking place today are a reincarnation of the events of 800 years ago. It ended in catastrophe, though not for everyone. The Galicia–Volhynia Principality survived that period. And why did it survive? Because it found a modus vivendi (editor’s note: an agreement enabling coexistence despite differences) and a modus operandi (editor’s note: a way of functioning) within this new Eurasian reality,” Oleksii Kush argues.

As he recalls, Daniel of Galicia initially tried to seek help from the West, received a crown, and hoped for a crusade to the East. But, the expert notes, no crusaders came, so Daniel had to seek a modus vivendi and modus operandi with the Tatar-Mongols. As a result, he traveled to meet the khan, drank black tea and kumis with him, and thanks to that, the Galicia–Volhynia Principality survived for another 100 years.

“If we speak about the current situation, we need a new Daniel of Galicia — someone who can go to China, meet the Son of Heaven, and drink black tea. Or simply pu-erh tea. By the way, tea-drinking is a sign of trust from the Chinese side, and as far as I understand, Trump was not offered tea. So we need to define this modus vivendi and modus operandi,” Oleksii Kush explains.

According to the guest of the program, Ukraine needs to offer a new strategic vision to its key partners — specifically, to become integrated into the Eurasian steppe corridor, linking China as the world’s largest producer of goods with Europe as a consumer market. To achieve this, he says, Ukraine should develop logistics connections with Central Asia and the Caucasus.
