Washington Doesn't Mind Waiting Until Russia Is Exhausted, Expert Says on the Rejection of Anchorage

Trump

Political analyst Ruslan Bortnik stated that Putin had expected Trump to pressure Ukraine over Donbas, but the reality after Anchorage is that Russia is becoming exhausted, and the United States is willing to wait, Politeka reports.

He discussed this on his blog.

According to the expert, Lavrov's statement that the meeting between Putin and Trump in Anchorage was a deception intended to buy time for supplying additional weapons to Kyiv is rather strange. It is strange, he explains, because the war did not stop at that time; military operations continued after the Anchorage meeting, meaning that Ukraine did not gain any additional time.

In general, the expert notes, the issue is that Russia is very dissatisfied that the United States is not pressuring Ukraine to withdraw its armed forces from the Donetsk region. Moscow believes that the Trump administration is moving away from the agreements reached in Anchorage.

"Therefore, this rhetoric is rather odd. However, Moscow is demonstrating maximum dissatisfaction. Moscow is trying to pressure Washington so that Washington, in turn, pressures Kyiv. Washington is now looking at this situation with a degree of detachment because it sees that not everything is going Russia's way on the battlefield, while Ukraine is inflicting increasing damage on Russia. And Washington does not mind waiting until Russia becomes exhausted and abandons some of its demands on the battlefield," Ruslan Bortnik explains.

Moreover, the expert adds, Russia's nuclear triad, including its strategic aviation forces, will also become depleted and worn down over time, which would be directly in Washington's interests because it is part of the U.S.–Russia strategic balance.

"All of this is causing considerable frustration in Moscow today. At the same time, the rhetoric that 'we were deceived again'—we were deceived in 2022, deceived in 2025, deceived with the Minsk agreements—may eventually wear thin with Russian society as well. People may start saying: 'Well, if you're constantly being deceived like this and keep falling for it, then perhaps you're not particularly professional and are not conducting policy in a professional manner,'" Ruslan Bortnik argues.
