“Full extrauterine development of the embryo”: a geneticist assessed the reality of artificial breeding of people

Geneticist Valery Zukin said whether humanity will reach the point where it will be possible to mass-produce artificially people, as described by Aldous Huxley in the book “Brave New World”, Politeka reports.

He spoke about this in Valery Savchuk’s author’s program “Different People”.

As the expert notes, it is no secret that writers have predicted many future achievements of humanity in their texts. For example, he reminds us, Jules Verne predicted mobile phones, H.G. Wells – video communication, Alexei Tolstoy – laser guns, which are currently being experimented on.

“Huxley played an approximate role. He predicted full extrauterine development of the embryo. This is impossible, fortunately or unfortunately, because for this you need to carry out fertilization outside the borders and have an artificial uterus. This is impossible,” says Valery Zukin.
Also, the doctor notes, Huxley predicted in vitro fertilization, this topic really excited the imagination of scientists and they embodied it. As he says, there is a film “Joy: The Miracle of Life”, dedicated to the first pioneers who developed this method, it shows a true story, and especially beautifully conveyed emotions, how doctors experienced, waited for the first cry of the child.

“But at the modern level, an embryo can be grown in a test tube up to the 7th day. There have even been experiments of growing it up to the 14th day. First, special conditions are required, secondly, a special permit is required in those countries where this is regulated. That is, up to 7 days maximum, the embryo must be either frozen or transferred to the uterine cavity,” concludes Valery Zukin.
