Trade, Operations, and Influence: An Expert Explains Why Zelenskyy’s Visit to Syria Matters

Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko explained that Zelenskyy’s visit to Syria not only opens up opportunities for cooperation but also signals that Russia is losing its influence in the region, Politeka reports.
He spoke about this in his blog.
According to the expert, during the visit Zelenskyy discussed economic and food cooperation with the President of Syria, as well as collaboration in the areas of security and energy. In addition, they agreed to open an embassy. Under Assad’s regime, which openly supported Putin and justified Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, there were no embassies, he notes. However, Syria now has a different government, which creates opportunities for developing cooperation.
“Russians fled Syria after those crimes, after the bombings, including of UNESCO historical heritage sites, after the killing of civilians, the destruction, and all the suffering caused by the Kremlin’s actions. They are being pushed out of Syria. Putin is losing Syria. Look—now the President of Ukraine is there on a visit; Putin is not there, and there are no Russian troops. This means Russia is losing its influence,” Oleksandr Musiienko explains.
Ukraine, the expert concludes, is gaining the opportunity to sell food to Syria, cooperate across various programs, expand its interests as much as possible, and potentially carry out further notable operations if successful.
“The President continues his tour of the Middle East. There is another country that would be desirable to visit—Egypt, a large country with influence in the region. Egypt is a gateway to Africa. Perhaps we will also see an African tour by the President,” Oleksandr Musiienko summarizes.
