"It Was We Who Made Trump Switch to Our Side," Says Political Strategist on the Strikes Against Russia

Political strategist Mykhailo Sheitelman argues that Donald Trump has indeed shifted toward supporting Ukraine—but not because he now sees Russia as the aggressor. Rather, he believes Putin has become a loser whose oil refineries have been systematically destroyed, according to Politeka.
He shared these views on his blog.
"There was even news about this from the G7—that Trump himself spoke there about changing his position. Watching everything from the sidelines, I honestly do see that the change is real. But why? We shouldn't think Trump's beliefs have changed. Of course they haven't. Trump has many flaws, but he also has certain strengths, and those strengths are simply the other side of those flaws," Sheitelman said.
According to him, Trump was initially against Ukraine because he saw no benefit in supporting it. He believed President Zelenskyy "had no cards to play" and viewed Ukraine as a small country with little to offer. By contrast, Trump saw Russia as a place where profits could be made. He believed Putin was in trouble and that ending the war could allow the United States to extract economic gains from Russia—through assets such as Gazprom, Rosneft, oil tankers, and more. Sheitelman argues that this is how Trump thinks: he runs the United States like a corporation, seeking profit not necessarily for himself personally but for the country as a business enterprise.
Sheitelman also recalled that in one of his books, Trump wrote that when entering negotiations, he does not know in advance exactly what outcome he wants. He may end up selling, buying, investing, or pursuing any of several other options. In Sheitelman's view, Trump's plan to profit from Russia has failed, and Putin himself has become a loser. Trump, he says, does business with winners, not losers—and today he sees Zelenskyy as the winner.
"There are no hidden stories here. That's all there is to it. Of course, he could change sides again if he starts to feel that we're the losers and Putin is the winner. Then he'd be back with Putin. But right now Putin is the loser. Putin has no gasoline. His oil refineries have been knocked out. Moscow has been bombed. St. Petersburg was attacked during the economic forum. It was we who made Trump switch to our side. He saw all of this and thought, 'Why would I want a partner like that?' That's why we have to keep going. If we're able to continue, everything will be fine. We've just received $6 billion for drones. If that's enough to keep this campaign going across Russian territory, then that's exactly what will happen," Sheitelman concluded.
