“Trying to play a very interesting game”: expert assesses whether India will side with the U.S. or with China and Russia

Foreign policy analyst Hlib Ostapenko explained that a China-centered Asia is actually not in India’s interest, but New Delhi is moving closer to Beijing because of Washington’s tariffs, aiming to become a pole of power, Politeka reports.
He spoke about this on the program Personality with Serhii Doiko.

“India is now trying to play a very interesting game. The U.S. has imposed additional tariffs of 25%, bringing the total to 50%. The U.S. is doing an absolutely reasonable thing, because India buys oil and gas from the Russian Federation, thereby sponsoring the war against Ukraine. What the U.S. did is the right move, but at the same time it pushed India closer to Russia and especially to China,” Ostapenko noted.

However, the guest emphasized, a China-centered Asia is absolutely disadvantageous for India. It aspires to become a global player in a multipolar world over the next 50 years. In other words, he stressed, India wants to be an axis that China would have to reckon with — but China doesn’t want that.

“Secondly, they actually have quite a number of unresolved conflicts. And if you add Pakistan to the mix… China cooperates very closely with Pakistan. We saw the war this summer between India and Pakistan. Fortunately, it ended quickly — they moved artillery to the border, exchanged airstrikes, but it all wrapped up fast,” Ostapenko said.

In addition, the expert pointed out, India also creates a lot of problems for China. For example, he explained, due to deteriorating U.S.–China relations, Washington is moving production to India. Even though India is far behind China in terms of technology, it’s still happening. In any case, the guest concluded, Prime Minister Modi sees India as one of the poles — and that’s why he is trying to play his own game.
