Chance for Peace or War of Attrition: Expert Explains Where Trump's Negotiation Tactics Have Led Us

Donald Trump, war in Ukraine

Political scientist and international relations expert Maksym Yali assessed the meeting between Trump and Zelensky at the UN General Assembly, Trump’s praise-filled post about Ukraine, and discussed whether there is any cause for optimism and where everything is heading, as reported by Politeka.

He shared his insights on his channel.

According to the expert, there were certain chances that peace negotiations might have concluded successfully by the end of the year, especially after Putin realized the futility of the war due to the summer-autumn offensive. However, after Trump’s statements, particularly his post, it became clear that if both Russia and Ukraine want to continue fighting, the US will simply profit from it, so good luck to both sides.

"If you look at the resources, the situation, the battlefield, and the trends of the last few months, you shouldn't expect any major breakthroughs from either side. Essentially, it will be a continuation of a war of attrition, which aligns with Putin's strategy," Maksym Yali argues.

The expert notes that the only somewhat positive conclusion that can be drawn from this entire situation is that Trump has finally begun to realize that Putin had been misleading him with false information. The goal of their talks and meetings was to buy time and escape sanctions.

"In principle, Putin achieved both of his objectives. Because the conditions for imposing so-called secondary sanctions against China, India, and other major oil buyers are absolutely unrealistic. I'm talking about the idea that all European countries would refuse Russian oil and gas. At least in the short and medium term, this is impossible. This is especially true for oil – Hungary, Slovakia," explains Maksym Yali.
