Election of a new Pope: key date announced

The election date for the new Pope has been set during a closed meeting of cardinals in the Vatican — the first such meeting since the funeral of Pope Francis.
The conclave to elect the new Pope will begin on May 7.
A secret conclave to choose the new Pope will commence on May 7, according to Reuters, citing a high-ranking source in the Vatican on Monday, April 28.
Around 135 cardinals from around the world are expected to participate in the conclave.
The previous two conclaves, held in 2005 and 2013, lasted only two days. However, Swedish Cardinal Anders Arborelius previously stated that he expects this conclave to take longer, as many of the cardinals appointed by Pope Francis have never met one another before.
The Sistine Chapel, where the conclaves are held, has been closed to tourists since April 28 in preparation for the vote.
Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, at the age of 88 in his residence at Casa Santa Marta in the Vatican. He had been treated for bilateral pneumonia and had undergone hospitalization. According to the Holy See’s press office, the cause of death was a stroke, irreversible cardiovascular collapse, and coma.
The funeral ceremony for Pope Francis took place on April 26 in St. Peter's Square in the Vatican.
Around 400,000 people attended the farewell to the 88-year-old Pope. World leaders were also present, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy with his wife and U.S. President Donald Trump.
After the farewell ceremony, the pontiff’s casket was transferred to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, where he was buried.
