Peace Talks on Ukraine: Trump Responds to Putin’s Refusal to Cease Fire Starting May 12

U.S. President Donald Trump made a statement following Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s refusal to implement a full ceasefire beginning May 12. Trump responded positively to proposals for peace talks on Ukraine.
On Sunday, May 11, President Trump wrote on his social network, Truth Social, that ending the ongoing “bloodbath” — as everyone hopes — would save hundreds of thousands of lives and pave the way for “an entirely new and much better world.”
Trump described the current situation as a “potentially great day for Russia and Ukraine,” amid Kyiv’s proposal for a 30-day ceasefire and the Kremlin’s statement expressing willingness to engage in peace negotiations.
He emphasized his intention to continue facilitating dialogue between the sides to achieve concrete results. According to Trump, the U.S. aims to focus on reconstruction and the development of trade. He also remarked that “an important week lies ahead.”
Meanwhile, during the night of May 11, Vladimir Putin proposed that Ukraine begin direct negotiations without any preconditions as early as Thursday, May 15, in Istanbul. He claimed that Russia had repeatedly initiated ceasefire proposals and had always remained open to dialogue.
However, Putin did not mention the “Coalition of the Willing” initiative for a 30-day ceasefire, scheduled to begin on May 12. In his speech, he emphasized that he expects a response from the Ukrainian authorities and their Western backers.
