Ukraine peace talks: Trump-Putin conversation could be decisive

British journalist Matthew Chance wrote about this in an article for CNN on Monday, May 19.
As the author of the publication notes, the most important battle is not being fought in the skies over Ukrainian cities, where the Russian Federation has intensified its attacks with drone strikes, nor on the front lines.
The decisive battle, writes Chance, fought by the warring parties and their allies, is for the attention of Trump, who is likely to be increasingly frustrated with efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine.
That is why Trump’s expected phone call with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin could be crucial, the author of the article points out. Moscow and Kyiv are trying to show that the other side is the real obstacle to peace, hoping in this way to sway Trump to their side, at least for a while. European officials have also announced plans to contact the US president before his phone call with Putin, fearing that the American leader’s views may be shaped by whomever he hears last.
Trump and Putin appear to share a firm belief that they alone have the power and skills to stop the war, the journalist notes. And Ukraine and Europe, in turn, will do as they are told. Ukraine’s greatest fear is that Trump and Putin will work out their own peace plan over the phone and then try to impose the Kremlin’s terms under the new threat of withdrawing vital US military and economic aid. The journalist also points out that Trump has leverage over Russia as well, so he wants to avoid America doubling down on US support for Ukraine’s military efforts.
