No one has yet fully recognized the status of the USA as a mediator - a political scientist on peace negotiations

Donald Trump, war in Ukraine

Political scientist Ruslan Bortnyk explained the role of the USA at the negotiating table between Ukraine and Russia: allies, mediators, opponents or trade representatives, reports Politeka.

He told about this in his blog.

As the expert explains, Ukraine wants to see the U.S. as an ally, not an intermediary, and Russia does not consider the U.S. a sufficiently equidistant player for it to be a full-fledged mediator. According to him, Russia is offering the USA a Cold War-style treaty, in which Washington is still an opponent, although relations with Moscow are changing under the Trump administration, but most importantly, it will divide the spheres of influence.

"The problem is that no one has yet fully recognized the status of the US as a mediator anywhere. And this applies not only to Europe, but also to the Middle East, for example. That is why American efforts aimed at settlement in Israel and elsewhere are failing so far. I think that the USA will not be able to be a mediator. And since they do not want to be an ally and cannot be a mediator, they will be something third," Ruslan Bortnyk argues.

In his opinion, the US will rather be a commercial representative, that is, it will maintain its presence, trade in weapons, technologies, and conclude resource deals, even calling itself an intermediary.

"On the one hand, this, of course, will further cause discontent in Moscow, because there will be arms deliveries. Either tanks from Australia, or F-16s from Norway, but deliveries will go if they are paid for by the national governments of Europe or other allies of Ukraine. On the other hand, this will, of course, cause dissatisfaction in both Ukraine and Europe, since it is extremely difficult to find money to fully buy everything in the USA. We were talking about hundreds of billions of dollars spent in 3 years of war. Even if $50 billion per hour is needed, and the last package of military aid for Ukraine was worth $60 billion, it will be extremely difficult to find it somewhere in European treasuries, Ruslan Bortnyk concludes.
