New EU environmental standards: journalist reveals whether this will affect Ukraine

Journalist Kateryna Kotenkova said that Europe is switching to environmentally friendly heating systems, and after joining the EU, Ukraine will also have to go through this process, Politeka reports.

She spoke about this on the Znaj.ua channel.

As the journalist notes, due to new environmental requirements for heating in Europe, a discussion has begun in Ukraine about the fate of gas boilers. So, in response to the increasing number of loud headlines about a possible ban on gas boilers, she reports, the GazPravda information platform has published an official explanation of the latest decisions of the European Parliament and their impact on Ukraine.

“The European Parliament has adopted amendments to the directive on the energy efficiency of buildings. According to the new standards, state funding for the installation of gas boilers will cease in EU countries from 2025. The platform leader Iryna Polotai notes that it is a gradual transition to environmentally friendly heating systems,” says Kateryna Kotenkova.

In addition, she adds, the plan also provides for a ban on the use of traditional gas and coal heating systems in new buildings from 2030, and by 2040 the EU should completely switch to alternative heat sources. The goal, the journalist explains, is to minimize emissions from the housing stock over the next 25 years and reduce energy consumption.

“Do these changes affect Ukraine? I’ll tell you this, at the moment – no. As GazPravda emphasizes, the adopted norms apply exclusively to EU member states. We are not yet in the EU. And even in the event of Ukraine’s future accession to the EU, the abandonment of gas will not be able to happen instantly. It is simply technically impossible to quickly abandon the current volumes of gas consumption. This will require many years of adaptation,” explains Kateryna Kotenkova.
