Most Hungarians do not support Russia, and Putin is very unpopular here – Hungarian expert

Orban

Hungarian security policy expert Attila Demkó stated that all the talk about a "pro-Russian Hungary" is merely media speculation; in reality, Hungarians support Ukraine, Politeka reports.
He made these comments on Ruslan Bortnyk’s channel.

“In fact, it’s very important to emphasize that Hungary is not neutral in this conflict. Hungary supports Ukraine in this war, despite what the press might say. We have voted for virtually all UN and EU resolutions against Russia. We are maintaining sanctions against Russia,” Demkó stressed.

He noted that just two weeks ago, Hungary voted in favor of the 17th sanctions package. However, the condition for the next package is the exclusion of bans on oil, gas, and nuclear fuel. Nevertheless, the expert emphasized that Hungary supports all other sanctions against Russia – including technological and aviation sanctions – so it cannot be considered neutral.

“So, the talk that Hungary is important for Russia or even supports it is simply media reporting. And I understand why Ukrainians may perceive it that way. Don’t get me wrong – I understand that Ukrainians feel this way, but the reality is quite different. Most Hungarians do not support Russia, and Putin is very unpopular here,” Demkó stated.

According to the expert, you won’t see Russian flags or portraits of Putin anywhere in Budapest, unlike in other European capitals such as Belgrade. Nevertheless, he admits that there are some pro-Russian individuals in Hungary. However, there are far more people who are somewhat irritated by Ukraine’s approach to the Hungarian minority and language issues.

In Demkó’s view, Ukraine has similar issues with Poland and Romania as well – though perhaps less pronounced than with Hungary.
