“Is Russia a Threat to NATO or Not?”: Expert Explains What the Alliance Thinks

Military servicemen and political experts Oleksandr Musiienko and Taras Berezovets discussed whether the United States might withdraw its troops from Europe amid the growing threats posed by Russia, reports Politeka.
They shared their views on the podcast After the War.
“What kind of long-term threat does Russia pose to NATO, and how will NATO respond? Or does it not pose a threat, as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has claimed? So, does Russia pose a threat to NATO or not?” said Oleksandr Musiienko.
As Taras Berezovets pointed out, NATO’s official documents clearly state that Russia is a threat, so Orbán — as the prime minister of a major European country — is certainly aware of them. However, he obviously has his own opinion. According to Berezovets, Orbán is simply an opportunist who always follows the political winds, catches the wave, and uses it to his advantage. And now, with a new U.S. administration and its own perspectives, the Kremlin is no longer seen as a threat by everyone.
Oleksandr Musiienko also recalled how Germany tried to provoke the United States with a media maneuver right before the NATO summit in The Hague. He explained that there was a statement from Chancellor Merz and Defense Minister Pistorius asking the U.S. to specify the scope and sequence of its planned troop withdrawal from Europe. The response, Musiienko notes, was silence — so for now, U.S. activity remains unchanged.
“They asked Trump a pointed question: ‘So, what’s going on with the troop withdrawal?’ There are currently 105,000 American troops stationed in Europe, with the largest contingent — over 30,000 — located in Germany. Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth has already started preparing for a withdrawal from Germany. Where to — that’s unclear. But they’re planning to reduce their presence. However, considering the threats that European NATO members now face from Russia, I don’t think the U.S. will be so quick to reduce its military presence in Europe. I just don’t see it happening,” Berezovets concluded.
