Trump Endorses Aid for Ukraine – Political Analyst on the NATO Summit

Trump

Political analyst Vitalii Kulyk stated that the NATO summit went even better for Ukraine and Europe than expected, though there is always a risk that Trump could simply change his mind, according to Politeka.
He discussed this on the program "Dialogues" with Maksym Yali.

"The document includes a position recognizing the long-term threat to the security of the Alliance posed by Russian expansion. Accordingly, this means that the increase in defense spending is directly linked to this prolonged threat from Russia. Russia is identified as an adversary, and as a result, NATO's European partners will be increasing their defense expenditures and reinforcing their security components in response to this threat. This is already a positive development," emphasized Vitalii Kulyk.

Moreover, he notes that nothing was said at the NATO summit to suggest that Ukraine cannot become a member of the Alliance — and nothing like that was included in the final decision. As the guest reminds us, there had been rumors that Trump wanted the summit decision to define Ukraine’s membership in NATO as impossible, but that did not happen, and the U.S. agreed to this outcome.

"What's more, Trump has committed to the idea that Ukraine must receive aid. Trump has agreed that the money spent on Ukraine will be counted toward the goal of increasing defense spending to 5% of GDP. Trump agrees that the security of Ukraine and the security of NATO are, if not synonymous, then very closely related concepts," Kulyk notes.

According to the expert, NATO’s European members also heard from Trump that he believes in Article 5 of the Alliance — the commitment to collective defense. However, he cautions, it’s important to understand that Trump often says one thing today and something entirely different tomorrow. So, while at the summit Trump agreed that the U.S. would defend its allies as long as they increase their defense budgets, he may later reconsider and decide that defending some village in Estonia from Russian aggression with American nuclear weapons is not worth it, or that hybrid Russian threats in the Baltic Sea do not merit a military response.
