Effectiveness Over Numbers: Expert Explains How Ukrainian Forces Stabilized the Situation in Sumy Region

Political analyst and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko commented on the situation in the Sumy region and explained whether the front line has indeed been stabilized and what the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) are planning, Politeka reports.
He shared his insights in a blog post.
According to Musiienko, the General Staff reported that Ukrainian forces have pushed the enemy farther from the city of Sumy, halted their advance along the line “Yunakivka – Yablunivka – Novomykolaivka – Oleksiivka – Kindrativka – Russian border – bridgehead on Russian territory in the Glushkovo district of Kursk region,” and have also liberated the village of Andriivka. Additionally, he noted that the General Staff stated the AFU are preparing and conducting counteroffensive actions.
“In fact, the General Staff’s official statement confirms our intent to counterattack in order to push the enemy out of the Sumy region and drive them back into Russia. It may even be about creating a buffer zone specifically on the territory of Kursk region, rather than in Sumy region, as the enemy had intended. That’s what the situation looks like. The fighting is tough and intense; the enemy is using significant forces, but our units have truly managed to stop them from advancing toward Sumy in an attempt to encircle or partially encircle the city, increase shelling, or even enter the regional center,” Musiienko commented.
He also referenced a Wall Street Journal article stating that Russia has concentrated around 50,000 troops in this direction—three times more than Ukraine’s grouping in the area. According to the expert, Russian forces outnumber Ukrainian ones everywhere, but the AFU is holding the line, so one should not assess the sides' strength solely by numbers.
“If we judged only by numbers, the Russian army would have already overwhelmed the Ukrainian forces just by sheer quantity, without even doing much. But for some reason, that hasn’t happened. The question is—why? Because it’s not about quantity; it’s primarily about effectiveness and quality—what these units have achieved or are capable of achieving in the future. The only criterion by which the situation and everything happening should be evaluated is effectiveness,” Musiienko explained.
