The Russian Federation is still perceived as an aggressor by the Trump administration – political consultant

Donald Trump

Political consultant Yuri Vanetik assessed how the U.S. attitude toward Ukraine and Russian aggression has changed since Trump came to power and how his administration envisions the end of the war, according to Politeka.

“It (ed. – the attitude) has changed significantly. First of all, there has been a systemic critique of the administration in Ukraine. But it's not criticism as of an enemy. It's criticism from the perspective of responsibility — not from the side of ideals or ideology, but from the perspective of what would have been more correct, what happened, how it could have been stopped, how things could have been changed. In other words, this approach has shifted,” notes Yuri Vanetik.

That is, the guest of the program claims, the Trump administration systematically seeks accountability and also wants to differentiate itself from the Democrats, who viewed things in a monolithic way in terms of ideals — therefore, such an approach will no longer be taken.

“But the attitude toward Ukraine is still very positive. Ukraine is still respected as a state defending its democracy and sovereignty, which it has rightfully earned. And the Russian Federation is still perceived by the Trump administration as an aggressor. However, the situation has now shifted toward questioning whether some things were done incorrectly; they want accountability regarding the aid — both financial and military equipment,” explains Yuri Vanetik.

In addition, the expert adds, the Trump administration genuinely wants to end the war, even if it means it becomes a frozen conflict. Nevertheless, the U.S. has not yet succeeded in doing so, which leads to frustration. At the same time, he emphasizes, the White House understands that the U.S. has already invested heavily — both financially and politically — in the Russia-Ukraine war, so they will not withdraw from the conflict, but are promoting a different viewpoint.
