Expert Assesses the Pace of Patriot Deliveries to Ukraine: "We Must Be Realistic"

Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko stated that the supply of Western weapons to Ukraine is indeed a NATO priority, but it’s important to understand that manufacturing takes a long time.
He discussed this in his blog.
According to the expert, the German TV channel n-tv reports that NATO countries have been ordered to transfer Patriot systems to Ukraine as quickly as possible. According to the Commander of NATO Joint Forces in Europe, General Grinkevich, there is an order to act with utmost urgency, and this is currently happening in close cooperation and coordination with Germany.
"Efforts are indeed underway, and this is further evidenced by the fact that the U.S. is delaying deliveries of Patriot systems to Switzerland due to Ukraine being prioritized. The U.S. State Department has informed Switzerland about this. The Swiss Ministry of Defense stated that the five Patriot systems ordered in 2022 were supposed to be delivered between 2027 and 2028, but the U.S. announcement means they will be delayed further," Musiienko explains.
According to the expert, unfortunately, there can often be a significant gap—5 to 7, sometimes up to 10 years—between signing a contract and the actual delivery of air defense systems or other types of weaponry, depending on the contract terms. Therefore, he concludes, on the one hand, Patriot systems do exist globally, are in service with other countries, and could potentially be transferred to Ukraine, especially with an initiative from Trump. On the other hand, fulfilling contracts and completing deliveries can take a long time.
"In this case, the Patriot systems were supposed to be delivered between 2027 and 2028. Are these systems already available or have they been produced in the U.S.? It’s unknown, and there are doubts. But the fact that their production is at least planned—given that there’s a contract with Switzerland—is certain. And Ukraine will receive them. Although here too, we must be realistic and understand that not everything happens at once, especially considering Switzerland was promised them for 2027–2028," Musiienko reflects.
