"The U.S. is not a participant, not a consumer, but simply a trader" — expert on supplying weapons to Ukraine with Europe's money

Political analyst Ruslan Bortnik explained why Europe turned out to be unprepared to buy American weapons for Ukraine with its own money, as proposed by Trump, according to Politeka.
He discussed this in his blog.

According to the expert, this imbalance between the U.S. plan and Europe's position arose because Trump held negotiations on this issue only with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. And while Rutte is related to Europe, he does not actually represent it — he doesn't even represent the Netherlands.

“In other words, most likely, Rutte spoke to Trump on behalf of the German-British bloc. Take note of the group of countries that are allegedly ready to purchase American weapons for transfer to Ukraine: Germany, the United Kingdom, and Britain’s allies — from Canada to Norway and the Netherlands. This is all the British axis or British military-political bloc,” Ruslan Bortnik emphasized.

That is why, the expert states, the situation developed in such a way that France immediately rejected the idea — it wants to buy European-made weapons. Italy has limited resources, and Hungary is simply against it. So, he adds, the burden falls on the German-British military-political bloc, which, with the rise of Merz in Germany, is gradually surfacing — like a submarine — on the political map of Europe.

“But even when the Germans or the British said ‘yes,’ it meant ‘yes, but.’ They hoped to spread the costs among everyone. What did Kaja Kallas say? She said the U.S. should also contribute its fair share, just like that. They thought NATO would collectively absorb these costs, but America is making it crystal clear that it is a trader in this situation. The U.S. is not a participant, not a consumer, but simply a trader,” Ruslan Bortnik explains.
