Negotiations with the USA in Paris: Expert Talks About Possible Outcomes

France, Macron

Political expert and military serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko shared insights on what to expect from the meeting between French President Macron and U.S. Secretary of State Rubio, along with special envoy Witkoff in Paris, according to Politeka.

He discussed this in his blog.

"This visit is taking place against the backdrop of media publications. For example, The Economist, citing its sources, reports that diplomats in Washington say some of U.S. President Trump’s aides, in private conversations, have expressed being fed up with Europe’s efforts to strengthen Ukraine," Musiienko notes.

He explains that the article highlights several steps taken by the administration that confirm this sentiment: the U.S. withdrew troops from a key base in Rzeszów, reduced its presence at 'Ramstein' meetings, and imposed a 10% tariff on Ukraine, among other actions. In other words, the U.S. appears to want Europe to decrease its military support for Ukraine. However, Musiienko believes it is unlikely that European countries will comply, though the visit is still worth closely monitoring.

"I think the visit may also concern the potential deployment of a future military mission on Ukrainian territory — that is, the deployment of troops under the leadership of the UK and France — as well as security guarantees, the post-conflict period, and Europe’s overall role. On the one hand, this is positive, because Europe is becoming a full-fledged actor in negotiations regarding the Russia–Ukraine war — something Ukraine has long insisted upon. This is very important for us, because we hope, of course, that European countries will side with us," Musiienko explains.

On the other hand, the expert suggests, the U.S. may ask France at this meeting not to implement strong protectionist measures in its economy in exchange for the opportunity to purchase American weapons. In his opinion, if such a possibility arises, it could be beneficial for Ukraine — then the situation is not as bad as it might seem.
