By continuing the war against Ukraine, Putin has made Russia vulnerable from the north and the sea: expert opinion

Putin

Political expert and military serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko stated that historically, Russia has always faced threats from the north. Now that the northern borders are surrounded by NATO countries, Putin has destroyed Russia's security, reports Politeka.

He shared this in his blog.

“If we look at the history of Russia, at different stages – whether it was Tsarist Russia or the Soviet Union – there was always a policy aimed at protecting the northern borders. Because all the most successful military operations conducted against Russia came from the north. Accordingly, it was essential to understand: since the invasions came from the north, the north had to be covered,” said Oleksandr Musiienko.

He reminds that this is why Peter I built Saint Petersburg and waged war against the Swedes, and why Stalin launched a war against Finland under the pretext of expanding territory and creating a buffer zone to protect the northern borders, fearing potential actions from there. But Putin, the expert states, is making strategic mistakes.

“In reality, NATO membership of Ukraine is more beneficial to Russia than that of Finland from a security standpoint. Why? Because all campaigns came through the northern expanses. So, if NATO is a threat to you, you're saying it’s okay for Finland to join, for Estonia to be a member of NATO, but not Ukraine? Are you serious?” Musiienko emphasized.

Nevertheless, the expert concludes, Russia continues its war against Ukraine, leaving its northern borders unprotected and rendering the existence of the Baltic Fleet in Baltiysk and Kronstadt practically meaningless. And all of this, he underlines, is the fault of one man obsessed with the war against Ukraine—he is, essentially, sacrificing Russia's strategic security.
