Helsinki 2.0: Philosopher Assesses Whether the Russia-Ukraine War Will End with a New Conversation on Global Security

Political philosopher Andrey Yermolaev explained that the current issue is not only the Russia-Ukraine war but a whole meridian of division and the fate of an entire continent, Politeka reports.
He shared his thoughts on the program “Dialogues” with Ruslan Bortnik.
"Indeed, the current realities are such that there are few prerequisites for a new Helsinki process — not enough of them. But on the other hand, what seemed more likely back in the distant years of 2018–2019, and what now seems improbable, still comes down to one key problem. The Russia-Ukraine war has played the role of a turning point in the history of an entire continent," Yermolaev stated.
According to him, we are already dealing with a new division, which is taking shape: some neutral countries have joined NATO, and the term ‘Berlin Wall’ is once again appearing in public discourse. Within the logic of this division, the philosopher notes, the global security system will gradually acquire a bloc-based character: NATO will reform and grow stronger, and Eurasian organizations such as the SCO will also evolve into military-political alliances.
"This meridian of division, it seems to me, dooms Ukraine to be in a constant state of tension — to remain a frontier for decades to come. And this limits development in the broadest sense — not only economic but also socio-cultural. This raises the larger question of how and when the true outcomes of the war will emerge — not just the end of military operations," Yermolaev emphasized.
The expert also notes that in the modern security system — both globally and continentally — the role of Asian leaders must be recognized. Therefore, he concludes, if we are to speak of a new conditional Helsinki process, it should be viewed as a broad continental convergence process, aimed at establishing a system of shared balances and counterweights.
