Gasoline Prices in Ukraine: How Fuel Costs Will Change Starting May 1

Fuel

Starting May 1, fuel requirements in Ukraine will change. Learn about the addition of alcohol and whether drivers should expect price increases.

Beginning May 1, 2025, all fuel suppliers in Ukraine will be required to sell gasoline containing at least 5% bioethanol, Politeka reports.

These changes are part of new state standards for the fuel market.

Bioethanol is a type of technical alcohol produced from agricultural products, particularly corn and sugar beets. It has long been used in many countries around the world as an environmentally friendly additive.

European countries, including Poland, have been selling fuel with alcohol additives for over 15 years. This type of fuel is labeled E5 or E10, where the number indicates the percentage of bioethanol.

Starting May 1, the same regulation takes effect in Ukraine: every gas station must supply fuel with no less than 5% bioethanol.
The only exceptions are gasoline with an octane rating of 98 or higher, as well as fuel intended for the Ministry of Defense and the State Reserve.

What about gasoline prices after May 1. Experts suggest that the introduction of bioethanol may slightly increase fuel prices at gas stations. However, with global oil prices currently declining, the price hike may be minimal or even go unnoticed by consumers.

How might this affect vehicles. There are concerns that alcohol additives could negatively impact engine performance. Fuel market expert Dmytro Lyouzhkin warns that after May 1, there may be a rise in the amount of low-quality or adulterated fuel on the market.

He advises vehicle owners to choose trusted gas stations such as Ukrnafta or networks with "green" branding, where the likelihood of getting high-quality fuel is much higher.
