Rhetoric or Reality: Expert Assesses Whether We Are Really Close to Peace

Donald Trump, war in Ukraine

Political scientist Ruslan Bortnik explained whether we are truly close to peace. He shared his thoughts in his blog.

"This is rhetoric in the style of 'yes, but…'. And you know, everything that was said before the 'but' often doesn't mean much," emphasizes Ruslan Bortnik.

Moreover, the expert explains, our society wants to hear about peace, wants to hear about hope for the end of the war. These are sociological data: from 69% to 80% of Ukrainians support the cessation of hostilities. Therefore, he concludes, if our politicians do not speak about how peace is just around the corner, they will simply lose their popularity. According to the expert, today, words about peace for us are like words about victory were in the past—something that everyone wants to hear.

"Furthermore, we must demonstrate a readiness for peace agreements and negotiations in front of Trump and the world that is watching," Ruslan Bortnik explains.

The main task for Ukraine right now, he emphasizes, is, first, to not lose the support of our Western partners, especially the USA, because support from Europe is more or less guaranteed at this point. And second, the expert adds, our leadership's task is to avoid any drastic strategic-political and legal concessions to Russia, as everything now revolves around this.
