“Why should we care about Russia’s opinion?”: Expert explains what security guarantees partners are preparing for Ukraine

war in Ukraine

Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko spoke about the models of security guarantees for Ukraine that international partners are discussing, and who will take responsibility – the U.S., Europe, or Turkey, Politeka reports.
He shared this in his blog.

According to the expert, the most debated issue now is closing the skies over Ukraine. Europe wants the U.S. to deploy its F-35 aircraft in Romania so that they could patrol Ukrainian airspace and help shoot down missiles, as well as provide additional air defense and missile defense systems. He notes that when it comes to security in the air and at sea, the picture is more or less clear and faster progress can be made. However, regarding a ground mission – its mandate, powers, size, etc. – certain questions still arise.

“Turkey is now actively starting to get involved. There is talk that perhaps Turkey should play a more significant role, since it is more neutral and Russia might believe it. So why shouldn’t Turkey lead a potential peacekeeping mission in Ukraine after a ceasefire? Such questions are now being raised in Ankara,” Musiienko explains.

At the same time, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, he says, is proposing a NATO-lite collective security model for Ukraine, similar to Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty. European leaders, the expert notes, are discussing security guarantees for Ukraine that would oblige Kyiv’s allies to decide within 24 hours whether to provide military assistance and support in the event of another Russian attack. Meanwhile, Politico writes that the burden of commitments should fall on Europe – this is the view in Washington. In his opinion, this is a moment of truth for Europe, showing how united it is in confronting existential threats.

“The fact that this issue is on the agenda, being discussed, and will be part of negotiations – that is a fact. Russia opposes it, but why should we care about Russia’s opinion? One way or another, there will be security guarantees, but the main burden will still fall on us, and this must be understood,” Oleksandr Musiienko concludes.
