“The Nature of War Has Changed”: A Soldier Speaks About the Use of Cutting-Edge Technologies

Ukrainian soldier Sviatoslav Dubyna explained that Ukraine could have defeated Russia in both 2014 and 2022, but the West did not provide weapons. Now, victory depends on who masters new technologies faster, Politeka reports.

He shared this on the “7 Steps” channel.

“The nature of war has changed. While in 2022, 2023, and 2024 the nature of war changed roughly once a year, now it changes every quarter. This all depends on the use of advanced technologies, which are constantly being improved and evolving. And we must take into account that our enemy is not a simple one. We have to admit that no country, not even NATO, is currently prepared to fight such an adversary. Unfortunately, we had some negative experiences in 2023 when the Russian Federation imposed its warfare tactics on us — holding forest lines and so on... But we cannot fight this way,” noted Sviatoslav Dubyna.

According to him, in 2022 Ukraine had a real chance at victory, but Western partners were frightened by the rapid successes of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and did not provide enough weapons for Ukraine to develop its offensive and end the war quickly.

“We had the opportunity to win in 2022 because neither Ukraine nor the Russian Federation was prepared for a full-scale war. But we recovered faster — Territorial Defense Forces, 700,000 volunteers... Russia had nothing like that. Unfortunately, our partners weren’t ready for such large successes on the battlefield,” Dubyna explained.

Moreover, he points out that this is not the first time such a situation has occurred. He recalls that back in 2018–2019, he was in contact with representatives of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, and they told him that in 2015 Ukraine had a chance to liberate Donbas, but partners — particularly the U.S. — didn’t provide enough weapons.

In his view, the West’s position is tied to their unwillingness to allow a vast nuclear-armed state to break up into pieces — it's easier for them to sacrifice Ukraine in such a scenario.
