"Putin May Take Advantage of This": Expert Explains Why NATO Won’t Respond to the Shahed Attack on Poland

Putin

Political expert and military serviceman Oleksandr Musiyenko stated that NATO, through its inaction, is sending clear signals to Putin that Russia can continue its attacks and provocations, Politeka reports.

He shared his thoughts in his blog.

According to the expert, there is now a visible sign of weakness from the West and NATO, because, for instance, U.S. Secretary of State Rubio doubts that Russia deliberately attacked Poland with Shahed drones. In such a case, he notes, there's nothing more to discuss—because this is no longer just the position of the Slovak or Hungarian prime ministers, but nearly that of the second most powerful figure in the United States. After all, Rubio is not only the Secretary of State but also Trump’s national security advisor.

“He definitely has access to the volume of information that would allow him to draw conclusions. Yet he sticks to the version that ‘well, it’s not all that clear.’ And when things are ‘not all that clear,’ maybe Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty shouldn't be invoked. And this means that Putin is receiving signals that NATO will not respond decisively right now, and that Russia can, ultimately, repeat such attacks in the future. This is absolutely obvious. And Putin may take advantage of this. Hasn’t he found a weak spot in the West and its support for Ukraine?” — warns Oleksandr Musiyenko.

The expert emphasizes that Putin deliberately attacked an EU and NATO country to create a crisis, possibly triggering a larger, more extensive confrontation—a world war, in other words. Against this backdrop, Musiyenko adds, it seems that the preference is to de-escalate to avoid such a scenario, to take steps to prevent it, and that is exactly Putin’s goal.

“If Putin is encouraged with statements like these, will he stop? What do you think? And what’s next? Will the U.S., the leader of the free world, really agree to redraw spheres of influence in Europe and hand that influence over to Russia? That would be unprecedented. I hope Europeans understand what is at stake and will stand with Ukraine,” — concludes Oleksandr Musiyenko.
