Public support for President Donald Trump's actions has fallen to its lowest point since his return to the presidency, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll published on Tuesday, April 22.

Approximately 42% of respondents approved of Trump's performance as president, down from 43% in a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted three weeks earlier, and lower than the 47% in the hours following his inauguration on January 20.

The poll revealed that Americans are dissatisfied with Trump’s efforts to punish universities he deems too liberal, as well as his appointment as chairman of the Kennedy Center, the leading theatrical and cultural institution in Washington.

However, as Reuters notes, Trump's rating remains higher than that of his Democratic predecessor Joe Biden for most of his presidency.

About 83% of respondents believe that the U.S. president must comply with federal court rulings, even if he disagrees with them.

57% of those surveyed disagreed with the statement that "it is acceptable for the U.S. president to suspend university funding if he disagrees with how the institution is run." Meanwhile, 66% said the president should not control major cultural institutions, such as national museums and theaters.

45% of respondents approved of Trump's immigration initiatives, while 46% disapproved. Around 59% believe that America is losing its global influence.

According to the poll, three-quarters of respondents — including 53% of Republicans — do not want Trump to run for a third presidential term in the U.S.

The survey was conducted from April 16 to 21 among 4,306 American adults. The margin of error is approximately 2% for all adults and about 3% for other subgroups.

A previous Gallup poll showed Trump's approval rating at 45% — higher than during the same period of his first presidential term.

Less than half of American adults said they trust the president on economic issues. About 44% expressed distrust in Trump’s ability to achieve economic success.
