“We’re not even at the halfway point yet”: expert assesses how long the peace talks may drag on

Political analyst Ruslan Bortnik said that these negotiations could drag on into next year, because Russia is not satisfied with Trump’s peace plan, under which Ukraine would remain in the Western sphere of influence, Politeka reports.
He spoke about this on his blog.
“The core provisions of Trump’s peace plan still do not satisfy either Ukraine or Russia. The Kremlin is still not ready to discuss the substance of these agreements or specific legal formulations, because implementation of Trump’s peace plan would leave 80% of Ukraine in the Western zone of control. Therefore, despite statements that this reflects the spirit of Anchorage and that this is the right direction, the Kremlin deliberately does not narrow its position and deliberately avoids discussing legal interpretations,” Ruslan Bortnik claims.
According to the expert, Ukraine’s main strategy is to reshape Trump’s peace plan in such a way that the United States considers it realistic and shifts the focus toward negotiations with Russia. Moscow, he notes, will dislike the peace plan regardless, which will intensify confrontation and tensions between the White House and the Kremlin.
“And we see that this issue is dragging on and being prolonged. Despite all efforts by the United States and sharp criticism from Trump, this negotiation process may drag on into next year, because we are not even at the halfway point yet, do you understand? We are only approaching the midpoint of the negotiation process,” Ruslan Bortnik emphasizes.
As the expert explains, we are currently only in one half of the negotiations — U.S.–Europe and U.S.–Ukraine — and we see that in this configuration the West cannot even reach agreement internally. After that, he stresses, negotiations between the West, Ukraine, and Russia still lie ahead, with Russia putting forward proposals that will once again require coordination among the United States, Ukraine, and Europe. That is, the expert concludes, these iterations and repetitions of negotiations may occur again and again.
