"The problems in the Russian economy will worsen this year": Expert says the Kremlin must be finished off with sanctions

Russian economy

Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko stated that the main issue is the impunity of Russian aggression, and therefore, the U.S. must increase economic and political pressure on the Kremlin, according to Politeka.

He spoke about this in his blog.

"As long as Russia has ways to bypass sanctions through various means, and continues selling oil and gas, especially to Asian countries, as long as trade hasn't been fully halted, naturally, the Kremlin still has certain revenues. And this is despite the fact that Putin has already admitted they have a deficit of 2.2 trillion rubles. Indeed, the problems in the Russian economy will deepen this year, yet unfortunately, they still have the capacity to wage war," Musiienko emphasized.

Therefore, the expert states, it is necessary for the U.S. to impose new sanctions against Russia and strengthen existing ones to limit the possibilities of evasion. Otherwise, the aggressor will continue to receive dual-use technologies, and will keep producing and purchasing weapons for its terrorist shelling of civilian targets in Ukraine.

Moreover, he adds, there must be political and diplomatic pressure on the Kremlin from the U.S., especially in all available international platforms, because right now we are witnessing blatant impunity. If this were not the case, if there were an adequate response to Putin’s actions, the expert stresses, then Putin would not dare to do what he is doing — openly terrorizing Ukraine with missile and drone attacks.

"That’s why this war criminal and terrorist must be stopped, and there are clear ways to do it. If this is not done, then we must not be naïve. And no one should think that social media posts or media statements will stop Putin. No, that won’t stop him. The only thing that will stop him is a demonstration of resolve and strength," Musiienko emphasized.
